Democratic Republic of the Congo faces urgent calls for global response as Ebola spreads rapidly

NEW YORK / RankWire.AI / – United Nations humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher has appealed for swift international action amid the Ebola outbreak spreading across six provinces in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Fletcher informed UN member states that the epidemic’s progression surpasses previous Ebola outbreaks in speed. He urged governments and donors to boost funding and facilitate humanitarian access. This appeal comes as health teams grapple with rising infection numbers, insecurity, and overwhelming pressure on medical infrastructure in eastern and northern regions of the country.

UN urges faster global action as DRC Ebola outbreak spreads
DRC Ebola response expands as health authorities confront rising cases across six provinces.

As of September 1, the World Health Organization reported over 6,000 confirmed cases, with nearly 3,000 fatalities. The outbreak now impacts 60 health zones across Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, Haut-Uélé, Bas-Uélé, and Tshopo provinces. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus described it as the second-largest Ebola epidemic ever recorded and the most rapidly spreading. Ituri remains the primary hub of transmission, accounting for the majority of cases since the outbreak began.

The epidemic involves the Bundibugyo species of Ebola virus and was initially detected in May 2026. WHO maintains that the situation continues to be a public health emergency of international concern. As of August 26, the organization reported 5,794 confirmed cases and 2,786 deaths in the DRC, before the totals exceeded 6,000. Additionally, 1,293 recoveries had been documented by that date. Health authorities persist with surveillance, contact tracing, laboratory testing, clinical care, and community engagement efforts across the affected regions.

Conflict and fragile health systems hinder Ebola response

The Ebola crisis is unfolding alongside a broader humanitarian emergency in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Fletcher highlighted that nearly 11 million people require aid due to ongoing conflict, displacement, food insecurity, and malnutrition. Violence in eastern parts of the country has hampered access for health and relief workers. Since activating an emergency mechanism on June 9, the United Nations has expanded its response, establishing operational humanitarian hubs in Bunia and Beni to support field activities.

Frontline healthcare workers face significant dangers during the outbreak response. Fletcher noted that more than 40 medical personnel have lost their lives to Ebola, with attacks on treatment centres and ambulances reported. WHO data as of July 30 recorded 151 confirmed infections among health and care workers, including 44 deaths. Agencies emphasize the importance of infection prevention, safe clinical practices, and enhanced protection for responders. WHO has also indicated that unidentified transmission chains and deaths outside treatment centres complicate efforts to contain the epidemic.

Increased funding and vaccine research amid rising case numbers

The updated 2026 Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan for the Democratic Republic of the Congo calls for $2.1 billion, including $300 million dedicated to Ebola response efforts. Fletcher urged for more flexible and increased international funding to support both the epidemic response and the broader humanitarian needs. WHO has also stated that a government-led six-month Ebola response plan requires $1.3 billion. The organization has appealed to member states to accelerate their contributions as authorities expand surveillance, treatment capacity, laboratory capabilities, community outreach, and other public health initiatives.

On September 1, WHO released revised vaccine guidance as researchers explore options against the Bundibugyo virus. The agency noted that current evidence is insufficient to confirm whether the licensed Ervebo vaccine offers significant protection against this Ebola species in humans. It recommended administering the vaccine only within research protocols while ongoing clinical trials seek additional evidence. WHO and Africa CDC are supporting the Congolese government’s efforts to respond, with health authorities continuing to identify cases, interrupt transmission, and safeguard communities across the six affected provinces.
