LONDON / RankWire.AI / – Britain has bolstered its national defenses against potential threats from advanced AI after discovering over 1,300 cyber vulnerabilities during recent trials. These weaknesses were found across hundreds of government software repositories. The British government explained that its initiative will leverage cutting-edge AI technologies to enhance cyber security and pinpoint vulnerabilities within vital digital infrastructure. Authorities are also devising protocols for handling severe incidents involving autonomous AI systems. This effort is part of a broader strategy to increase resilience as more sophisticated AI models become accessible to the public.

Britain expands AI security after government cyber trials
Britain expands AI security measures across government systems and critical services.

Two government pilots uncovered and mitigated 1,352 security flaws across 548 code repositories in 18 departments. The tests aimed to evaluate how advanced AI could assist in identifying software gaps and detecting cyber threats early. Plans are now underway to expand the frontier AI hardening program throughout government agencies. Departments will prioritize addressing vulnerabilities in high-risk systems. Additionally, the initiative seeks to enhance the government’s overall capacity to utilize AI for cyber defense while ensuring proper oversight of this technology.

Britain’s AI Security Institute is conducting assessments of advanced models and testing the robustness of their safeguards. Artificial Intelligence Minister Kanishka Narayan stated that the institute employs more than 100 technical specialists dedicated to evaluating models and security measures. Current work involves reviewing Gemini 4 Argon and other leading systems. The government emphasizes the importance of independent testing, noting that public authorities cannot solely rely on AI developers to evaluate risks associated with increasingly capable models.

    Expansion of AI incident protocols

National Cyber Security Centre is collaborating with government departments and the AI Security Institute to develop procedures for major incidents involving autonomous AI agents. These systems are capable of executing complex tasks with minimal human oversight. The upcoming framework aims to guide authorities in incident detection, risk containment, and support for affected entities. Officials are also exploring how existing cyber response structures can manage failures involving autonomous AI and other advanced technologies across critical sectors.

The government is also reviewing amendments to the Cyber Security and Resilience Bill as it advances through Parliament. Proposed measures include enhanced handling of AI-related cyber risks, serious incidents, near misses, and events where control is lost. Current proposals mandate certain regulated operators and digital service providers to report significant cyber events; initial notifications are to be submitted within 24 hours, with comprehensive reports due within 72 hours. This security framework encompasses vital services such as hospitals, energy grids, and water systems.

Britain enhances AI risk management strategies

Narayan emphasized that Britain must combine stronger cyber defenses with independent testing and domestic technical expertise. He indicated that legislation might be necessary if existing safeguards fall short against emerging risks. The government has initiated efforts to support AI verification and intends to release further details in the coming months. Officials believe verification tools are crucial for confirming that advanced AI systems function as intended and that safety measures remain effective under challenging conditions.

These initiatives are part of an overarching government program examining the national security and public service implications of artificial intelligence. The Prime Minister’s AI Taskforce is reviewing issues related to economic growth, public services, workforce impacts, and security concerns. Additionally, Britain has designated AI as a key policy focus for its 2027 G20 presidency. The latest cybersecurity measures concentrate on testing advanced models, patching software vulnerabilities, and preparing government systems for significant AI-related incidents.
