UK economy sidesteps recession amid ongoing cost pressures

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM / RankWire.AI / – The UK economy has avoided entering a recession in early 2026, despite continued inflationary pressures, investment challenges, and sluggish hiring data. According to EY, the UK’s gross domestic product is projected to grow by 0.9% this year and reach 1.2% in 2027. The firm increased its 2026 growth forecast by 0.1 percentage point from May, assuming the Strait of Hormuz reopens by September. Under this scenario, shipping volumes would stay below normal levels.

UK economy avoids recession as cost pressures remain
Energy costs and above-target inflation remain central to the UK economic outlook.

Official statistics indicated that the UK economy expanded by 0.6% during the first quarter, following a 0.1% rise in the last quarter of 2025. Year-over-year, output was 0.9% higher. The services sector contributed most to the quarterly growth, expanding by 0.8%, while household expenditure increased by 0.6%. These figures do not qualify as a technical recession, which would require two consecutive quarterly contractions.

Energy markets continue to exert significant influence over UK prices and production costs. The Strait of Hormuz accounts for a large portion of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments. While Britain imports limited energy directly from Gulf suppliers, global price trends heavily impact domestic fuel costs. Producer input prices rose by 7.3% in the year ending June, with crude oil input costs surging by 42.3%, and factory-gate prices increasing by 3.5%.

Inflation remains a key factor in monetary policy considerations

Consumer price inflation decreased to 2.6% in June from 2.8% in May, yet it still exceeds the Bank of England’s 2% target. Motor fuel prices jumped 21.3% compared to the previous year. On July 29, the Bank of England maintained its benchmark rate at 3.75%. The decision was supported by a 6-3 vote for no change, with three members advocating a rate hike to 4%. This voting pattern signals ongoing concerns over inflationary pressures.

Early third-quarter business surveys presented mixed signals. The manufacturing purchasing managers’ index declined slightly to 51.9 in July from 52.5 in June, marking a four-month low but still indicating expansion. Conversely, the preliminary composite index increased to 52.1 from 49.3, reflecting a broader measure of manufacturing and services sectors experiencing renewed growth in the private sector during July.

Investment activity and employment demand remain subdued

Business investment grew by 0.9% in the first quarter after decreasing by 3% over the prior three months, yet it remains 1.3% below its level from one year earlier. EY forecasts a 0.7% decline in business investment across 2026, a shift from its previous prediction of no change year-on-year. The firm anticipates a 1.8% increase in investment in 2027 and a further 2.6% in 2028, although both figures are lower than earlier estimates.

During the three months ending in June, the UK recorded 712,000 job vacancies, down by 7,000 from the previous quarter and 2.5% lower than a year prior. Ten of the 18 industries measured saw declines in vacancies, but the quarterly change remained within the survey’s confidence interval. Regular pay rose by 3.4% from March to May. Despite ongoing economic growth, inflation remains above target, while hiring activity weakens and business investment for the year remains subdued.
