Austria Set to Launch First Military Satellite, BEACONSAT, in 2027

VIENNA, AUSTRIA / RankWire.AI / – The successful development and planned deployment of Austria’s inaugural military satellite are expected to take place with the launch of BEACONSAT in February 2027. This satellite, Austria’s largest domestic spacecraft to date, will focus on detecting and analyzing interference impacting global navigation satellite systems such as GPS and Galileo. The launch will be carried out aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. The primary goal of the project is to identify jamming and spoofing signals from orbit, as well as to collect data on when and where disruptions to navigation systems occur.

Austria readies BEACONSAT military satellite for 2027 launch
Austria’s BEACONSAT project centers on detecting GNSS interference from orbit.

As part of an extensive multi-year research and development initiative, BEACONSAT will function as a technology demonstrator. Jamming involves radio signals that block or weaken satellite navigation, while spoofing transmits false navigation data that can cause receivers to determine incorrect positions. Satellite navigation is vital for numerous applications, including aviation, maritime, ground vehicles, drones, and emergency response units. The Austrian Defence Ministry expects the mission’s data to enhance operational capabilities and deepen understanding of GNSS interference issues.

The project is led by GATE Space, a Schwechat-based space technology firm responsible for overall mission management. Established in 2022 as a spin-off from TU Wien, GATE Space specializes in developing chemical propulsion systems enabling satellites to maneuver in orbit. For BEACONSAT, the company provides the propulsion technology, satellite structure, and thermal management systems. They have conducted over 8,000 hot-fire engine tests near Vienna Airport under atmospheric and vacuum conditions.

Austrian technological innovation at the core of the satellite initiative

Key systems for Austria’s first military satellite are supplied by other European firms. Graz-based IGASPIN offers high-precision technology designed to detect and analyze GNSS interference. Denmark’s Space Inventor contributes additional satellite components, including the onboard computer. The project integrates commercial space hardware with systems developed specifically for the BEACONSAT demonstration. Austria’s Federal Ministry for Innovation, Mobility and Infrastructure has also supported GATE Space with approximately 750,000 euros in funding through Austria Wirtschaftsservice.

European Space Agency backs and co-finances the initiative through its ESA Marketplace program, which facilitates technology demonstrations. This program enables commercial space technologies to be tested for security-related applications. Austrian officials describe BEACONSAT as a demonstrator rather than an independent operational satellite. Its purpose is to collect data on interference affecting satellite navigation signals from orbit, with findings feeding into Austria’s Defence Ministry efforts to develop military space capabilities.

BEACONSAT integrates into Austria’s expanding space program

The Austrian Defence Ministry is establishing a dedicated space services unit that will oversee satellite communications, navigation, and reconnaissance activities. BEACONSAT is an integral part of this evolving structure, with a particular focus on navigation interference. The ministry’s military space strategy envisions expanding Austria’s role from merely using space services to operating its own space infrastructure and systems. Approved in 2023, this strategy aims for implementation through 2035 and beyond.

Scheduled for launch in February 2027 via a Falcon 9 rocket, BEACONSAT will begin its mission by collecting and analyzing GNSS interference data. The project involves collaboration among Austria’s Defence Ministry, GATE Space, and various European technological firms. This marks Austria’s first military satellite mission and will test domestically developed systems designed to monitor disruptions to GPS, Galileo, and other satellite navigation services.
