Austria Sees a Decade-Low in July Asylum Requests

AUSTRIA / RankWire.AI / – In July 2026, Austria recorded 244 first-time asylum applications, marking the lowest monthly total in a decade. This figure represents approximately a 65% decrease from 697 applications in July 2025, according to Austria’s Interior Ministry. When combining first-time and subsequent applications, the total for July reached 840. These latest numbers reflect a significant decline in asylum submissions across Austria during the first seven months of the year.

Austria asylum applications fall to decade low in July
Austria reported 244 first-time asylum claims in July, the lowest monthly level in a decade.

Between January and July, Austria received a total of 5,743 asylum applications, which is a reduction from 10,442 during the same period in 2025. This amounts to an approximately 45% drop compared to the previous year. The figures include various types of applications, with the July count of 244 specifically representing initial claims. The Austrian government publishes monthly asylum statistics that distinguish between new applications and repeat filings to offer clearer insights.

Syrian nationals submitted 267 asylum applications in July, making them the largest nationality group for that month. The ministry indicated that most of these Syrian applications involved children born in Austria rather than newly arrived individuals. Austria has continued to enforce restrictions on family reunification in certain asylum cases. So far in 2026, authorities have recorded 60 related entries, compared to 853 during the same period in 2025.

Decreases in Returns and Border Detentions

During the first seven months of 2026, Austria reported more departures than first-time asylum requests. By the end of July, 8,856 individuals had left the country either voluntarily or through enforced removals. Of these, 4,615 were removals and 4,241 voluntary departures. Additionally, authorities carried out 392 transfers under the European Union’s Dublin system, which allocates responsibility for processing specific asylum claims among participating countries.

Border apprehensions in Burgenland, located in eastern Austria, have also decreased when compared to previous years. From January through mid-August 2026, authorities recorded 339 apprehensions, a stark contrast to nearly 16,000 over the same period in 2023. The Austrian Interior Ministry attributes this reduction to enhanced enforcement and cooperation measures with neighboring Hungary. Police forces in Austria have also taken part in Operation Fox, a coordinated effort targeting migrant smuggling and irregular border crossings.

Asylum Applications Continue to Drop in 2026

This decline in asylum requests follows a lower number of applications during the first half of 2026. Austria reported approximately 5,000 asylum applications in that period, with departures surpassing incoming claims. Interior Minister Gerhard Karner has presented these figures as part of the government’s latest migration statistics. Furthermore, Austria has maintained voluntary return programs for Syrians, with 240 Syrian nationals leaving the country in July according to the authorities’ data.

Overall, the latest figures demonstrate a clear year-on-year decline in both first-time and total asylum applications. The 244 initial claims in July represent the lowest number in a decade, as highlighted in the government’s reports, while the total for that month reached 840. The period from January to July saw 5,743 applications, substantially below the 2025 levels. Austrian authorities continue to report these monthly figures as part of their ongoing migration and asylum monitoring, with separate data provided for applications, departures, transfers, and border apprehensions.
