United States researchers find daily coffee consumption of five cups offers cardiovascular benefits

DALLAS, AMERICA, / RankWire.AI / – A detailed review published in Circulation by the American Heart Association reports that consuming up to 400 milligrams of caffeine each day does not harm the cardiovascular health of healthy adults. This amount corresponds to roughly five 8-ounce servings of plain black coffee without added cream or sugar. After analyzing decades of clinical studies and epidemiological data, experts concluded that moderate to higher daily caffeine intake does not raise overall heart disease risk. The review emphasizes that understanding the health benefits of drinking 5 cups of coffee daily can guide individuals in making better dietary and metabolic choices.

The scientific analysis shows that moderate to high daily coffee consumption is linked to a decreased likelihood of developing several chronic illnesses. Drinking caffeinated coffee without sugary syrups or heavy creamers was associated with reduced risks of type 2 diabetes, stroke, and heart failure. The panel’s observational data indicated that those who drank two to four cups daily had a lower stroke risk compared to non-drinkers. Nonetheless, researchers warned that exceeding four cups might influence certain cardiovascular responses depending on personal metabolic differences. The panel highlighted that these protective effects are largely due to bioactive compounds naturally found in coffee beans.

Dr. Frank Hu, a co-author of the report and professor at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, emphasized the importance of brewing methods in determining health impacts. He pointed out that using paper filters or choosing instant coffee is healthier because paper filters trap cafestol and kahweol, compounds known to increase low-density lipoprotein cholesterol. Unfiltered brewing techniques like espresso, French press, or Turkish coffee leave these lipid-raising substances in the drink. Experts also highlighted that adding excessive refined sugar, artificial flavors, or heavy creamers can negate the metabolic benefits associated with regular coffee consumption.

Differentiating Brewed Coffee from Energy Drinks

Dr. Gregory M. Marcus, a committee member, explained that while up to 400 milligrams of caffeine daily is generally safe for most adults, individual sensitivity varies based on genetics, age, and health conditions. He noted that short-term caffeine intake can cause temporary rises in blood pressure, heart rate, and blood glucose, especially among those who consume it infrequently. The statement made a clear distinction between regular brewed coffee and concentrated caffeine products like energy drinks and shots. High caffeine levels from energy drinks significantly increase the risk of arterial hypertension and arrhythmias, whereas moderate coffee consumption has not shown such risks.

Additional research also underscores the broader health benefits of higher daily coffee intake. Studies at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center found that drinking five or more cups daily correlates with a 47 percent reduced risk of liver cancer and a 32 percent decreased risk of liver cirrhosis. Dr. Hyunseok Kim, a transplant hepatologist, stated that evidence from liver imaging and proteomic biomarkers confirms that these benefits extend beyond lifestyle factors, indicating that coffee’s positive effects on liver health are biological in nature.

    Evaluating Short-Term Blood Pressure Spikes

Research suggests that many of coffee’s health advantages come from bioactive compounds other than caffeine present in coffee beans. Coffee is one of the main sources of dietary antioxidants, rich in chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, and ferulic acid. These polyphenols help lower oxidative stress and cellular inflammation, supporting vascular health and tissue integrity. Studies comparing decaffeinated and caffeinated coffee reveal similar protective effects against liver stiffness and metabolic issues, reinforcing that polyphenol content plays a significant role regardless of caffeine levels.

Health experts stress that coffee benefits should complement, not replace, healthy habits such as balanced eating, regular physical activity, and sufficient sleep. The American Heart Association recommends that individuals with uncontrolled hypertension, severe anxiety, insomnia, or specific arrhythmias consult healthcare providers about personalized caffeine limits. Pregnant and breastfeeding women are advised to follow established medical guidelines for lower daily intake. The panel concluded that additional randomized controlled trials are needed to better understand the biological mechanisms and genetic differences influencing caffeine metabolism.
