Spain Sees Close to 2,150 Fatalities Due to Heatwaves in August Data Shows

MADRID / RankWire.AI / – According to official daily mortality tracking released by the Carlos III Health Institute, nearly 2,150 individuals died from heat-related causes across Spain in August. The MoMo monitoring system recorded 2,149 excess deaths linked to extreme heat during that month, making it the second-highest August total since the nation’s data collection began in 2015. The ongoing consecutive European heatwaves continue to push seasonal death rates to historic levels across the Iberian Peninsula, with August’s toll nearing 2,150.

Public health researchers analyze daily mortality monitoring statistics on office computers.

The only August figure higher was the 2,184 heat-related deaths registered in 2025. Public health figures reveal that from May 15 to August 31, a total of 5,234 lives were lost due to thermal stress, marking the highest summer mortality figure recorded by the national public health institute since the tracking system was introduced, surpassing the previous peak of 4,652 deaths in summer 2022. While Spain approaches 2,150 heat-related deaths in August, health authorities are assessing the significant strain placed on regional emergency response units.

The Ministry of Health’s demographic data indicates that elderly populations faced the highest risk during the heatwaves. Of the 2,149 victims in August, 2,064 were over 65 years old, including 1,285 individuals aged over 85. Gender data shows that 1,283 of the deceased were women and 866 were men. Medical experts have observed that prolonged high temperatures worsen chronic cardiovascular and respiratory issues among vulnerable groups.

Regionally, Catalonia in the northeast recorded the highest number of heat-related fatalities, with 1,164 deaths during August. Valencia ranked second with 227 fatalities, followed by Andalusia at 138. Local public health agencies have ramped up community outreach and expanded access to cooling centers, though persistent extreme nighttime temperatures continue to hinder recovery for affected residents.

The State Meteorological Agency AEMET has reported that high-temperature risks persist into early autumn. Forecasters confirmed that a period of unusually hot weather for September affected central and southern provinces, with daytime temperatures considerably above seasonal norms. Climatologists note that Europe is experiencing more frequent, intense, and longer-lasting heat waves, consistent with global warming patterns.

Over One Thousand Heat-Related Deaths Reported in Catalonia During August

National health agencies are actively working with local authorities to bolster prevention efforts and monitor at-risk populations. Emergency medical teams have updated protocols to respond swiftly to heat-induced health emergencies. Public health warnings continue to advise citizens to limit outdoor activity during peak heat hours and ensure proper hydration amid ongoing unseasonable atmospheric conditions.

Once September’s final surveillance data are available, authorities plan to produce comprehensive post-summer mortality analyses. Experts emphasize that long-term structural adjustments in urban planning and housing insulation are essential to safeguard vulnerable communities from future heat extremes. The official mortality figures will be accessible via government portals to guide future health policy decisions.
