London / Euro Wire/ – A devastating drought sweeping across Europe has been driven primarily by human activities, according to a comprehensive scientific review that underscores how climate change is intensifying drought conditions on the continent. An international group of climate experts discovered that record-breaking heat levels are the main force behind these events, surpassing the influence of seasonal rainfall deficits. As a result, many European countries are experiencing severely lowered river water levels, widespread water restrictions, and severe wildfires following a historic heatwave in June. The report highlights that a warming planet accelerates moisture loss from land and water sources, creating an environment that is both dry and highly unstable. Despite spring being wetter than average, it was the temperature spikes driven by climate change that pushed the region into a critical drought situation.

The World Weather Attribution team released a study explaining how rising temperatures are actively reducing natural water reserves. Mariam Zachariah from Imperial College London pointed out that the drought is not mainly caused by reduced rainfall, but by a warmer atmosphere that leads to greater moisture deficits on land. This means the risk of drought continues to grow even in areas where rainfall patterns remain stable. The scientists clarified that for each 1 degree Celsius increase in temperature, the atmosphere can hold approximately 7 percent more water vapor. This greater capacity results in increased evaporation from soil and vegetation, depleting water sources across the landscape.
Using extensive weather datasets and sophisticated computer models, researchers assessed the probability of these extreme weather events in today’s hotter climate versus a scenario 1.4 degrees Celsius cooler. Their results reveal that soils are now five times more likely to be extremely dry in western Europe compared to a pre-warming climate. In eastern Europe, these drought conditions are 11 times more probable. The analysis also showed that the likelihood of very high evaporative demand levels observed from April to June in western Europe has increased about 80 times. This means that rainfall deficits that once would have caused only minor issues now lead to significantly drier soils and more severe droughts.
Calls for Immediate Global Emission Reductions
Dominik Schumacher from ETH Zurich stressed that the tendency for soils to dry out unusually early in spring is already evident as temperatures rise. He explained that as global temperatures increase, the atmosphere’s thirst intensifies rapidly, drawing critical moisture from rivers, lakes, reservoirs, and the land itself. The combination of a relatively wet start to the year followed by extreme heat created ideal conditions for large wildfires. The rapid soil drying primed the land for ignition, contributing to widespread fires across multiple nations. The findings confirm that climate change worsening drought in Europe is shifting traditional weather patterns into increasingly dangerous cycles.
The agricultural sector is experiencing unprecedented pressure due to extensive soil moisture loss. These droughts are causing severe hardship for farmers, resulting in historic crop failures across borders. France is projected to see its lowest maize harvest in 50 years, indicating a major disruption to regional food supply. Similarly, Romania has lost over one million hectares of maize, further threatening food security. These domestic shortages, combined with ongoing international conflicts, risk driving up food prices and disproportionately affecting low-income households.
Projected Continued Warming and Its Impact
The hydrological consequences are worsening the economic damage, with abnormally low river flows disrupting vital freight transportation networks. Major shipping routes on critical waterways are experiencing increased disruptions, underscoring the severity of the continent’s worsening water scarcity crisis. Reduced river flows threaten energy production in regions that rely heavily on hydropower. Data from the Copernicus Climate Change Service confirmed that June was the hottest on record for western Europe. Many nations have already imposed emergency restrictions or temporary bans on non-essential water use to conserve dwindling supplies.
Scientists warn that if global temperatures continue to rise, these drought conditions could become more frequent. They emphasize that such intense evaporative conditions are already occurring at 1.4 degrees Celsius of warming, highlighting the urgent need for emission reductions. If global temperatures reach 2.8 degrees Celsius as projected, the likelihood of these conditions could double. Without swift and decisive action to cut emissions, experts warn Europe faces a future of increasingly prolonged and intense droughts and scorching summers.
