UK’s Solar Capacity Reaches 22.8 GW Ahead of Upcoming Plug-in Regulations

    August 3, 2026
Facebook WhatsApp Twitter Pinterest LinkedIn Telegram Tumblr Email Reddit VKontakte

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM / RankWire.AI / – UK solar power capacity had grown to 22.8 gigawatts by the end of June 2026. The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero reported approximately 2.076 million installations nationwide. During June, households, companies, and developers added 27,391 systems, which contributed an additional 132 megawatts of capacity. The provisional figures may be revised as more project data becomes available in the national database. The total includes rooftop systems on homes, commercial properties, and utility-scale solar farms.

UK solar market reaches 22.8 GW before new plug-in rules
New UK plug-in solar rules set an 800-watt limit for approved household systems.

June marked the second-highest month for installations in the UK data series, with March 2026 holding the record at 28,782 new systems added. Over the year leading up to June, solar capacity increased by 2.2 gigawatts, representing a growth rate of 10.9%. The year 2025 also saw a record-high addition of roughly 269,000 systems, the highest annual total ever recorded. Smaller rooftop installations led the number of new systems, while larger projects contributed significantly to the increase in overall generating capacity.

Attention is now focused on the upcoming plug-in solar rules that are set to come into effect on August 27, 2026. Under this framework, approved microgenerators will be able to connect via a standard UK plug and household socket. Eligible products are limited to a maximum of 800 watts of alternating current output and must meet Interim Product Specification version 2, ensuring safe operation with the local distribution network. Devices such as plug-in batteries or those that store imported household electricity are excluded from these rules.

    Safety standards regulate plug-in connections

This legal update amends the Plugs and Sockets Safety Regulations 1994 alongside the Electricity Safety, Quality and Continuity Regulations 2002. The UK Parliament received the statutory instrument on July 17, just one day after ministers approved it. The amendment introduces a specific exception to existing restrictions on plugs used for generating equipment, requiring a notified body to verify each plug’s compliance with the BS 1363 standards. Product approval applies across the UK, with the electricity safety amendment covering England, Wales, and Scotland.

The interim specification details requirements for electrical design, mounting mechanisms, fire safety, labeling, and consumer instructions. A technical study tested representative plug-in solar devices on domestic wiring under controlled conditions, confirming stable operation and no sustained unsafe energisation or thermal hazards. The study also identified differences in export controls, electromagnetic compatibility, and overall product quality, which helped shape the UK-specific safety standards necessary for market approval.

Retailers prepare for the new approved product category

A government consultation attracted 466 responses from businesses, specialists, regulators, and members of the public. Over 85% of respondents supported the interim specifications, and most also endorsed the plug regulations. Participants included manufacturers, installers, network operators, electricians, academics, and consumer advocacy groups. Some raised concerns about older household wiring, noncompliant online products, and the need for clear user instructions. Others emphasized the importance of distinguishing between plug-in solar panels and plug-in battery systems.

Retail chains such as B&Q, Currys, Amazon, and Lidl are actively preparing for the launch of this new product class. The setup is designed for households unable to install traditional rooftop panels, including some renters and residents with balconies or outdoor spaces. Importantly, systems utilizing the new connection method cannot operate legally before August 27. Starting on that date, only approved products within the 800-watt limit will be permitted to connect through a standard household socket. The capacity total for June does not include systems that will use the new plug-in connection framework.
