Additionally, 66 stations reported their highest temperature ever recorded for any month. On June 28, Vienna reached 40.0 degrees, while Bad Deutsch-Altenburg hit 40.1 degrees the next day. Several low-lying areas experienced 10 to 14 consecutive days with temperatures exceeding 30 degrees.
The Wegener Center at the University of Graz estimated that combined socioeconomic damages from the June and late July heatwaves amount to approximately €1.4 billion. This initial estimate accounts for health impacts, lost productivity, agricultural damage, infrastructure pressure, and increased cooling demand. It also considers effects on ecosystems and public services. The figure is not a definitive government assessment nor an insured-loss total; insurance data only includes damages covered under active policies.
The heatwave intensity exceeds previous Austrian events
The Wegener Center evaluated the events through area-degree days, a metric combining heat intensity, duration, and geographic extent. Their calculations indicate about 16,700 area-degree days for the June heatwave. The late July episode is estimated to have ranged between 22,700 and 25,000. Austria’s prior record was during a 24-day heatwave in July and August 2013, which reached approximately 22,100 area-degree days across land below 1,500 meters elevation.
The extreme temperatures also corresponded with a notable rise in heat-related fatalities. The Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety estimated 395 deaths linked to heat in June 2026. This figure represents the highest June total since the agency began monitoring the data. Heat-related mortality reflects excess deaths during periods of unusually high temperatures, without necessarily requiring heat to be listed as the sole cause on death certificates.
Prolonged drought deepens amid rainfall shortages
Following months of unusually dry conditions, Austria faced the heatwave with a significant rainfall deficit. From January 1 through July 27, total nationwide precipitation reached about 426 millimeters, well below the long-term average of 609 millimeters for that period—a shortfall of nearly 30%. Authorities describe the first seven months of 2026 as the driest comparable period since at least the early 1900s. Notably, lower Austria, Vienna, and northern Burgenland experienced some of the most substantial rainfall deficits.
Persistent high-pressure systems, intense sunlight, and scarce rainfall amplified evaporation rates during late spring and summer.
